Common Moving Terms
Most people don’t move often enough to understand the meanings of most common moving terms. We recommend that before your big move, you become familiar with a few of the basic moving terms from the list below. This will make it easier for you to communicate with your moving company, and will help make your move an easy one.
- Accessorial Service can be any additional service other than the actual transportation of the customer’s goods. This may include packing, unpacking, appliance servicing, or extra pick-ups. The cost for these services is in addition to the transportation cost.
- The agent is the moving company handling your move, and is a representative of the van line. The agent can serve as the booking, origin, destination, or hauling agent.
- Auxiliary service, or shuttle service, is used if the assigned vehicle is unable to make the normal pick-up or delivery due to constraints (narrow road, inadequate parking, weak bridge). The auxiliary service is the use of a smaller vehicle to complete the pick-up or delivery.
- The Bill of Lading is the receipt for your goods and contract for the transportation of them. Before you sign the bill of lading make sure that you understand everything on it. Your signature releases your goods to the carrier.
- The booking agent is the agent that accepts the order for your move, and registers it with the van line. The booking agent is not necessarily the origin or destination agent.
- The carrier is the mover who is providing transportation of your goods.
- C.O.D. (cash on delivery) shipments are those in which payment for the transportation is due at time of delivery.
- The destination agent is the agent located at or near your destination. They are able to provide information to you towards the end of your move.
- An estimate is a general calculation of what the transportation charges will be. This cost should include any accessorial services that may be provided. The estimate should also include an estimated weight of your goods.
- The gross weight includes the weight of the van and your goods after they have been loaded.
- The hauling agent is the agent who owns the van assigned by the van line to transport your goods.
- The high value inventory is used for items such as antiques, valuable collections, and jewelry. Any item that is worth more than $100 per pound per article is considered to be of high value.
- The inventory is a detailed list of your goods and their condition before they are loaded onto the van.
- The net weight is the gross weight minus the tare weight.
- The Order for Service is the document that authorizes the moving company to transport the customer’s household goods.
- An order number is used to identify and track your shipment. It is located in the upper right hand corner of the Bill of Lading and the Order for Service.
- An origin agent is the agent located at or near your origin. They are able to provide information to you in the beginning of your move.
- Overflow happens when items are left behind due to insufficient space on the first moving vehicle. A second vehicle is then used to transport these items.
- Storage-in-Transit is the temporary storage of your goods pending further transportation. Your shipment is stored in the warehouse of the carriers agent, and may not exceed a total of 90 days.
- A survey is performed by an agent to examine your goods in order to give you an accurate estimate.
- The tare weight is the weight of the van before any goods are loaded onto it.
- A tariff is the carriers provisions, which includes rates, for service performed, and can be applicable to the customers move.
- Valuation is not insurance. It is a tariff based coverage for a customers goods while they are in the care of the carrier.
